Our Youth & Wind Programs

SPYO
Selangor Philharmonic Youth Orchestra

In line with SPO’s vision, Selangor Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (SPYO) was founded in the hopes of nurturing new musicians with an opportunity to play in an orchestral-orientated group. We regard SPYO as a “mini-SPO” and is currently composed of mainly primary and secondary school student , usually coached by senior SPO musicians. The SPYO also had its first performance in Chapter 3 concert. Recently, SPYO made their first debut on 23rd January 2016 at Civic Hall (Petaling Jaya), with around 50 players on stage. SPO also has a preparatory program for young music makers to develop their skills and to understand the working atmosphere of an orchestra. This program is important for young musicians to hold on to their dreams and aspire to bring up a culture in the country.

Nurture

There is a no age-limit allowance where coaching is by senior SPO musicians. A platform to learn and teach.

Milestones

‘Chapter 3’ was the first performance concert, making its first debut on 23rd January 2016 at Civic Hall with 50 players on stage.

Importance

Developing skills and understanding of the collaborative atmosphere of an orchestra, as a crucial part of a musicians’ upbringing.

SPWO
Selangor Philharmonic Wind Orchestra

Another sub-orchestra team of SPO, Selangor Philharmonic Wind Orchestra (SPWO) is formed with a mission to attract wind players to perform besides playing with the SPO team itself. SPWO’s performances are led by Mr. Chris Wong Ken Lun and Mr. Wong Tian Kuan. SPWO players are involved in playing contemporary music and performing in smaller scale performances and gigs.

Admission Criteria & Guidelines ​

SPO welcome musician from all ages. However,  we believe the level of achievement in the musicianship will be equally important for every musician to be able to enjoy and be part of the orchestra.  Kindly refer to the guidelines below for details:

SPYO

  • Minimum of Grade 3 level of any recognised exam board.
  • Players will be under observation for one month by the section leaders and committee.

SPO & SPWO Musicians

  • Minimum of Grade 6 level of any recognised exam board.
  • Players will be under observation for one month by the section leaders and committee.
